Curriculum

Our curriculum

Through our curriculum our children learn powerful knowledge in every subject. They are then able to retrieve this knowledge and use it creatively to take their learning even deeper. Please find below documents detailing our curriculum values and principles, and our teaching and learning vision.

Equality objectives throughout our curriculum:

We ensure equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, sexual orientation, age or socio-economic background. We are determined to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all are treated with courtesy, respect, integrity and dignity. We want our whole school community to feel proud of their identity and ability to participate fully in school life.

We study 'foundation subjects', in addition to Maths and English. If you would like to know about each subject in more detail, please click on the image next to the subject title.

Art and Design

Children explore inspirational artwork, whilst learning the skills of:

Painting, Collage, Printing, Textiles

Drawing, Sculpture, Digital Media. They will create, invent and analyse their designs. They will develop their curiosity and allow interest to flourish.

Science

We nurture each child’s natural curiosity and encourage them to question the world around them.  We encourage our children to show respect for the natural world that surrounds them and demonstrate an understanding of how science impacts on real life.

PSHE – Personal, Social, Health and Economic education.

We develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to keep themselves happy, healthy and safe, and to live to be healthy and responsible members of society. We help them believe in themselves, instilling values such as compassion, hope, faith and forgiveness

Geography

We encourage our children to view the world with awe, wonder, respect and understanding by delivering geography in a practical and meaningful way.  We make links and appreciate our local area, in particular Dartmoor National Park.

We will help children develop their thinking and decision-making in order to protect our world.

R.E.

We encourage our children to be respectful and open-minded members of society, to explore what people believe and the difference this makes to how they live.  This will give them the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to be respectful and open-minded towards others with different faiths and beliefs.

Computing

We aim to give our pupils the life-skills which will enable them to embrace and utilise existing and new technology in a socially responsible and safe way in order to flourish.  We want our children to be able to participate effectively and safely in this digital world.

Modern Foreign Language

We aim for our pupils to approach learning a language by letting them explore and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them.  This will give them a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences.  The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners.

Design and Technology

We teach children how to use media and materials for a purpose, encouraging innovation, creativity, risk takers and resourcefulness. They will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems.

History

We teach children to use their enquiry skills and also to develop their curiosity of the past. This inspires them to want to know more about the world around them, including why we live our lives today the way we do.

Music

Music gives us the ability to connect directly with our soul and our emotions.  It really is a language in its own right.

We strive to enable children to allow music to play an important role in their lives whether as a career or simply for pleasure.

P. E.

We encourage the development of life skills, the attainment of personal goals, building motivation and confidence along with self-determination.

We also develop intrinsic motivation in our pupils that will help them establish purposeful physical activities as an integral part of their lifestyle in the future.
