Reward System
There is a strong emphasis on the re-inforcement of positive behaviour in school by the use of praise and rewards. Each child is a member of one of four ‘houses’ or ‘teams’ in school and can earn team points or stars for their team. These are awarded to recognise things such as effort, achievement, good behaviour, politeness or kindness to others. Stickers and ‘thank you’ tokens are also used as rewards.
There is a weekly Gold Awards system to recognise particularly significant achievements. Children’s names are read out to the whole school during Friday’s assembly and successes are shared and celebrated with the whole school community. Similarly, there is also a ‘Playground Praise’ awards book and awards for playground workers.
We have one overarching school rule:
“Keep your hands, feet and cruel words to yourself.”
Our Behaviour Policy is supported by our approach to children’s personal, social and emotional development. Parents are welcome to read the policy if they wish to do so but, briefly, we have four basic principles:
- Listening / Noise – Children should show consideration for others and listen politely. Noise levels should be appropriate to the activity.
- Respect for other people – Children should show respect for others in school, be polite and show concern for the safety and welfare of others.
- Respect for property / environment – Children should show respect for personal property, the property of others, school equipment and their environment.
- Effort / Expectations – children should always do their best in terms of their work and behaviour.
Each class creates its own set of ‘rules’ around these principles at the beginning of the school year through negotiation, discussion and agreement with the children. There are rewards and sanctions in place to encourage the correct behaviour and parents are always contacted at an early stage if a child is persistently badly behaved.
