Sports Newsletter - December 2020

As Christmas approaches so does a jam-packed term of sport come to an end. We have not let Covid stop us from enjoying a variety of sport and virtual competitions and it's been wonderful to see the children flourish and try the best in all they do. All the sport that the children have taken part in has earned them points for the new sports cup. This sees the childrens’ houses compete against each other, scoring points for the events they enter. This will see us finish the year with a Sports Day where a Phase 2 house and a Phase 3 house will be declared a winner.

Inspire Days

The South Dartmoor School Sports Partnership has been in three times this term to help us run Inspire Days. Each day has been run on a different theme. The first Inspire Day saw us run our Intra-School Cross-Country that had been delayed due to Covid (more details below).

Our second day saw Becky Mason join us in Phase 1 for a Dance Festival themed around 'Fireworks'. Three classes took part in a workshop that consisted of learning and performing a Fireworks dance. The pupils were so creative and expressive with their movement and really enjoyed themselves.  Mrs Prywata came to watch and was amazed at how brilliant they were.

Our final Inspire Day of the term saw Becky Mason run a 'positive playtimes’ session for the class bubbles. The idea was to encourage and develop safe, inclusive, fun and active playtimes with minimal equipment. All the pupils learnt lots of new games and enjoyed taking turns and coaching each other too. Becky hopes this will have re-introduced the 'Elastics' (french skipping) craze and a new 'Island Invaders: Rock Paper Scissors’ game too.

Intra-School Cross-Country

At the start of term Phase 2 and 3 took part in our own Cross-Country event. The weather was wet and horrible but everyone joined in and had a good go. Grace & Favour Home kindly made and donated beautiful wooden momentos of the event for every participant, and awards were also given for first, second and third and effort. The results for the Cross-Country are as follows;

These next four events were put on by the Dartmoor School Sport Partnership as virtual competitions for primary schools to run for their children. These were put on due to not being able to meet up for face-to-face competitions due to COVID. The Phase 2 and Phase 3 children responded really well to these events, with over 70 children entering the Gymnastics, all the children entering the timed run and over 110 children entering the Games Skills and SportsHall Athletics. The scores/videos of the children who came 1st, 2nd or 3rd in these events at Bovey Tracey were then entered into the virtual Dartmoor School Sport Partnership finals, virtually competing against primary schools in the South Dartmoor, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, & Totnes areas. Then if they won this competition, they got entered into the Devon Virtual Games. At time of writing we have had the results back from Gymnastics and Games and they’re detailed below.

Virtual Gymnastics

Before half term the children worked hard on their gymnastics set routines, with many children practising hard at home too! We had 70 children enter this virtual competition and the standard was amazingly high. Children initially competed against each other in school and the winners from each category were sent off to compete against other schools in our area in a virtual competition.

Bovey Tracey did really well; in Phase 2 we had Martha, Daisy, Olivia, Ryan and Oliver go through to the South Devon Finals and in Phase 3 we had Mimi, Beth & Chloe go through.

Bovey were then very successful in the South Devon finals, with Martha, Daisy, Ryan and Chloe all coming 2nd in their categories and we also had two winners; Mimi and Beth. Due to winning the South Devon finals, Mimi and Beth went through to the virtual Devon Games final, where Mimi was placed 3rd  and Beth won her category. Amazing results, well done to everyone!

Timed Run

This was another virtual competition from the South Dartmoor Sports Partnership. Phase 2 children had 4 minutes to run as far as they could and Phase 3 children had 6 minutes. The children were able to practice during PE and their score was written down each time. This allowed for the children to try and beat their distance, and see progression. Every child in Phase 2 & 3 completed this activity and many improved their distance. Unfortunately, we only had space to put 12 children forward to the Dartmoor Sports Partnership finals, these were as follows:

The last two sports we focused on in PE were Invasion Game Skills & Sportshall Athletics (but outside!!).

For Invasion Game Skills the children had five different activities to try, and they had seven events to practise for the Sportshall Athletics. The aim of this again was to practise in their PE lessons and then finish the last week with a ‘Finals week’ whereby Mr Cole came in to record their best scores at each event. All the activities counted towards their scores so the children needed to do their best in each event. We had an amazing 110 children enter this event and all their scores have been sent off to South Dartmoor and entered into the virtual competition. All the children did so well and there were very few points separating all the children which shows what hard work they put into to all the events.

All the children who entered the events did so well and should be pleased with the effort they put in and the improvement in their skills. Below are the current point totals in the Sports Cup for Phase 2 and Phase 3. The children get 10 points for every competition they enter. The winner of the competition then scores 40 pts, second place 30pts and the third-place child then scores 20 pts for their house. This will then culminate in our final competitions at Sports day and the winning house for each phase will be presented with a cup.
