Curriculum intent and implementation

Our over-arching curriculum intent for children from Bovey Tracey Primary School in PSHE:

As healthy, independent and responsible members of society, we would like our children to:

  • believe in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it,
  • have high aspirations,
  • develop empathy,
  • deepen spirituality,
  • connect with their community,
  • have opportunities to learn and practise human virtues,
  • instil values such as compassion, hope, faith and forgiveness and
  • develop values that challenge individuals beyond the material world.

To achieve this, we will:

  • Ensure that SMSC values form an integral part of daily classroom practice.
  • Be dedicated to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils, families and staff.
  • Take part in weekly assemblies which focus on our school values of compassion, high aspirations, excellence and enjoyment, equity, resilience and self-belief.
  • Teach a weekly PSHE lesson in each class which focusses on the current PSHE theme – Relationships, Living in the wider world or Health and wellbeing.
  • Ensure children are immersed in exciting and relevant themes within our PSHE spiral curriculum.
  • Plan so that all children can access the subject well by providing scaffolding, vocabulary support, extension questions and theories to explore.
  • Immerse the children in ‘Awareness Days/Weeks’ throughout the year.
  • Ensure our knowledge of pedagogy enables us to deliver lessons in a variety of ways to increase engagement.
  • Directly teach a range of higher-level vocabulary to enrich each child’s understanding and ability to communicate.

PSHE Curriculum

At Bovey Tracey Primary School, we teach Personal, Social, Health & Economic education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.

The PSHE Education Programme Builders for key stage 1 to 4 created by the PSHE Association offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through programme of study which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.

This programme builder takes a thematic approach to primary PSHE education, covering all three core themes of the Programme of Study (Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World) over the school year, with three topics within each unit per term. This approach allows different year groups to work on similar themes at the same time, building a spiral programme year on year.

Term Unit Content
Autumn: Relationships Includes families and friendships, safe relationships and respecting ourselves and others.
Spring: Living in the wider world Includes belonging to a community, media literacy and digital resillience and money and work.
Summer: Health and wellbeing Includes physical health and mental wellbeing, growing and changing and keeping safe.

This also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.
